1) Planning a holiday... or planning a composition?

I have always believed that composing is very personal.  Frederick Delius   (an English Composer) said “Music is an outburst of the soul”.  I think this sums up perfectly the relationship between Music and the composer.

Everyone has a unique and individual process, which usually involves including certain elements and ideas in their piece, for example a motif or a sequence they like. This is almost like their “stamp”.  When originally planning this composition, I realised it was very much like planning a holiday.  Below, I have included a table illustrating the similarities between the two processes.

Planning a holiday
Planning a composition
Start by thinking of places/ countries to travel to
Think of the different genres you would like to compose, researching different sounds
Pick your final destination
Pick a genre
Work out the best way of getting there
Planning the different ideas and work out what you'd like to include in your composition
Go to different travel agents
Look at different artists
Read articles and views on the different places
Research the different artists
Look at Photos
Listen to Tracks
Talk to friends and ask of their opinions
Ask friends about your idea and take into account their suggestions
Book your final destination
Decide final idea
Look forward to being on the plane and taking off, eventually reaching your final destination
Look forward to when the piece is finished and your final target has been reached.

Originally, I was going to present this portfolio as a travel brochure.  In the next post, I have included the front cover design and the second page of this brochure.
