12) Sinead O'Connor

Sinead O'Connor.
After deciding to compose an Irish piece, I asked an Irish friend, who her favourite (Irish) singer was.  She told me to investigate Sinead O'Connor.

Sinead's music career began when she was discovered by the Irish Band “Tua Nua”.  She then co-wrote their hit single “Take My Hand”.

Before finishing school, she ran away to Dublin where she worked for a telegram service and sang in pubs.
Sinead O'Connor and The Chieftains released a single called “The Foggy Dew”

Ensign, a London record label, released Sinead's debut album “The Lion and the Cobra”

Despite the album not having any hit singles, over 500,00 copies were sold, therefore making it platinum.

Her second album shot to the top of the charts earning O'Connor four Grammy Award nominations.

She then became famous for her controversial public outbursts. These began in 1989 when she announced her support for the IRA.
She then refused her Grammy award for Best Alternative Album as a stand against the extreme Commercialism of the Grammy Awards.
